New Rendered user interface

Well like I said in my previous post I wanted to render my intro screen again and I think that I've done it and I am happy with this one.

After looking at my other piece I thought that it would be more appropriate to simplify the animation so rather then adding twists and curves I thought that a simple zooming would work and, it did. I think that having the slow moving camera lets the user view the contents of the scene before reaching the main screen.

I have also added the user interface screen with the selected icons though, these may change because of the mount of time that I have left I had to change the background colour because it clashed with the user interface screen however I like this change because choosing a lime green has worked well and, with the help of lighting has given a strong blend of colours but not strong enough to over power the main attraction.

Reflect back on last week

Well the brief says to keep up to date with what we do throughout this project via our blog so lets see what I've been up to last week. Well Monday came and it was straight to work my first aim was to create the user interface on 3D Max. This took me a few days however after rendering the piece there were a few things that I was not happy with.

Above was my first render but there were quite a few problems that made me think that this could not be my final render. Like my avatar video I thought that it was a bit jerky and was definately not the look that I was going for. another problem that I noticed was that there was no user face screen. I had the laptop all ready however there was no desktop screen that the users could see. So when I next render I would like to make the animation less jerky and have a desktop screen created ready for the viewers to see.

I also created an idea for a user screen (the screen on the laptop) I had created this on 3D Max as well. I got the idea from the 'Sony Bravia' website however with the time I have left and with the little knowledge that I know of flash CS3 I doubt I could have got the results in time.

I like the effects but I need to get to know this software first before I can work on the more complicated stuff.

This is the new image that I plan to use for my user screen. I think that I will lose all of the small icons because that will take the attention away from the interactive parts.

Over the weekend I plan to create the icons for my interactive pieces, make the pieces for my puzzle (still waiting for my code for this piece) and create the maps for my photo album ready to be rendered on Monday so fingers crossed with that.

Logo Design

In a few previous posts I posted images of my sketchbook that showed initial ideas of my logo designs. Well over the past few weeks I moved my ideas from paper to computer and I think I have my final logo that I will be pleased to use in the future to present my work to others.

Out of all my ideas I decided to go with the logo named 'S'ar Moi' Now I know people, lecturers etc are going to ask me 'What does it mean?, What has it to do with your identity?" well the meaning of S'ar Moi to me in translation mean 'this is me' or it is me' however rather then using the correct wording (c'est) I've changed it to my first few letters of my first name. Doing this has changed the phrase so it is personal to me. When it comes to the question how it relates to my identity then my answer to this is that I want a new identity. I am now in my final years of study and I am already nearly at the end of m first year already. This is a logo that I would like to use in the future i.e. in inteviews, when I present my work in the future to other companies.

I am pleased with my outcome and plan to create a small pixilation piece that I could maybe use in my interactive box. Below are my final chosen logo. I am still deciding which lips I want to use but this is the definate layout for my final logo.

Reflect back on review week

Ok so its just been over a week since my review and I thought it was about time to look back and reflect on what Deborah and Simon said.

Overall I feel that the review went very well, I received some positive feedback and some targets that could help me improve my work. I felt that I had achieved my previous targets and so my new set targets were:

- Follow up work experience.
- Start thinking about pathway for next year, think of a arguement for the pathway once chosen.
- Start thinking about a project to create whilst over the summer.

I feel that these are good targets for me to complete however whilst at my review Simon and Deborah both helped me come to the conclusion that I already knew or, had a better argument for one of the pathways which was ...... online environments HOORAY!!!

Looking at this subject I know that it is going to be a challenge however we've all got to start somewhere right. Besides I like a challenge. I plan to research into my chosen place where I am having a shadow day because I am hoping to gain just more then a shadow day but maybe some regular work experience because there's not alot of well multimedia designers in the south and the company I have a chance with (4T2) look very popular.

I thought that I had a good argument for my chosen pathway however when I was originally thinking of my pathway I made my arguement up for games design, having changed my mind I now have to think of a different arguement for online environments. This will be my main aim as I have to start writing my arguement soon.

These are two quick examples of what I could potentially use for an introduction because a laptop screen will be my user interface.

Work Experience!!

Over the Easter rather then doing my own pieces of work I decided to look around for some work experience and with some help from my neighbour I managed to find some with two companies.

The first company is called 'ayunia' (run by Linda Bett) Ayunia's services include web design, Search Engine Optimisation and updateable websites.

Linda has given me the chance to work with her throughout the next year, the outcome of my experience will be the 'Business South 2009' show. It is a show that covers every aspect of business in todays world (well in the south) I will be helping with some of the design ideas and creating a new image for the business. This will give me a good opportunity to see how a business is run.

My second work experience or shall I say shadow day is with a company called '4T2' this is a bigger company that involves interactive online marketing, game design, web design and animation. I am hoping to gain more than just a shadow day in the summer but I'm just happy that they have given me the option to have a day with them.

The websites for these two places are:

Sketchbook Intial ideas

Ok now the majority of this sketchbook I showed in my presentation but as one of my targets was 'to upload images of sketchbook' to my blog I thought that it would be a good idea to to show the work so far done on my planning. According to my gaunt chart I am on track and plan to start my final pieces as from next week but I do need quite a bit of help as to the flash software.

To start I quickly brainstormed a few things that would relate or, what others would relate to me. This gave me a rough idea on where I could start on my project.

These are quick notes that I have jotted down for ideas and in lectures that feel could help me, the five main ideas that I may work with are: work, friends, family, university and future. The images of the MacAir laptop is a reference for an idea that I may use as a user interface, this is only an idea though.

Before I started my online interactivity task I thought that I would research into some other sites to get an idea of different interactivity objects. This helped me gain a broader idea on different interactive objects.

A quick few sketches of ideas and on how the laptop could look(my user interface)

A photoshop mood board with some different angles of a laptop, a brainstorm of some different interactive narratives that I could use in my actual final piece of work.

A few sketches to show people my approach to my interactive ideas, a few of these however have changed over the holidays so will show these in my next posts.

These are some initial ideas for my logo. I am finding this task quite difficult as I want to be more visually dramatic (one of my set targets) so I am still to complete this however if I carry on I think that I will get a strong logo that I could work with in the future.

Whilst being away at Easter I have also been doing some filming for an idea that I am going to work with. However I have been having trouble uploading the footage onto my computer so I am going to try and upload the footage onto the computers at the university and maybe get some help. My next aim is to finalise my logo ideas, I still have to carry on with some different ideas just to make sure that I have the right logo that I could potentially use as my logo in the future.

Online Interactivity Analysis 3

Now this interactive website particularly caught my eye and the reason for this? Because its just an amusing site that would interest a wide audience but in particular the younger age group. The main aim of the website is to advertise an animated children’s film called ‘Kung Fu’ that is soon to be released in the cinema.

As soon as I opened the page I am greeted with strong, bright and vibrant colours that catches the viewers eyes. Rather then the main menu strong imagery from the film itself is the first thing I see, straight away it makes me aware that the page is advertising a film. Giving the users an option to choose what country they are from (giving the site a well-built audience) I was able to enter the main website. A short and quite amusing animation is shown of the main character which sets the scene of the main page so, the interactivity has already started before I had even opened the website. The main site kept to the theme of the film using the same theme of animation to the motion picture. The layout is easy to the viewer’s eye and sets a scene to the genre of the movie. In most of my opinions I would usually say that text should be inserted however on this site I sense that it works better without text, reason for this is because the imagery is so powerful that there us no need for wording.

sto
As this websites main target audience is at a younger age I found it user friendly however even though the introduction to the website was attractive to the eye I found a lack of instructions on how to work /navigate through the pages. Even though it is really just common sense to navigate around a website it still took me some time to work out that you had to move the cursor to the far left or the far right to actually scroll around the imagery. Nevertheless there were clear designs on where the user could click i.e. the selected image would highlight. A key piece to this site that I did not see in other sites was the main key. At the bottom of the pages a small menu bar (concealed behind the logo) would appear revealing a list of the different characters that appear in the film. All of the buttons that are in the website are either clearly labelled or, has used strong imagery that lets the user easily know where they would be going within the site.

The designers have obviously thought about the whole design of the site in order to keep the content of the website relevant. With the use of images significant to the film the user can get a strong feel to what they are about to view. What I liked about this website was that as soon as the web page is open the users are immediately exposed to the main content and, gives the audience a clear view on what the website is about.

I think the designers main aim was to gives the audience a closer view about the characters, doing this has also set a clear outlook on the genre of the film. Each character had been given a page with each page stating information about each character. What I didn’t quite understand was why the designers gave the users two different ways to get to the same page. At the bottom of the pages a main menu appears when the cursor hovers over the big image of the panda, each icon is a link to a certain character. The second option is that when the users move around the page they can click on the certain character, which is linked to the same pages, that the main menu pages be linked too. This gives me the impression that the designer’s aim was to make these pages easily accessed because they provide the viewers the most information about the characters. As for the rest of the site I found the content was organised in a way that I could easily find it. For example the temple (the centre of the site) holds the historic artefacts, somewhere where I’d assume they would be. Overall the organisation of the site was a successful design helping attract more users.

The websites interactive elements are quite simple and I feel that more elements could have been added. The main parts of interactivity would be the small clips from the film, which, once again enhances the characters from the film. With the use of sound, imagery and the way I could move around the site (move cursor to the left the page would move left, move cursor to the right and the page would go right) I was kept interested however, this site is still under construction and only two of the buildings were accessible so I will keep looking at this site for future reference to see if anymore interactive elements are added to the site. as the website is for a younger target audience the designers have included activities for the certain age group, this includes activity sheets and colouring pictures however to use these the user must print them off. This could be a disadvantage especially if the user does not have a printer. As this site is mainly for the younger audience I feel that it would be a beneficial idea to include an interactive game because after researching into different websites I noticed that all websites with the same type of target have a game or some type of interactive element that would keep the user amused.

The main aim of this website is to reflect the identity of the film, not so much the company. However from the first look of the website I knew straight away that the film makers were Pixar. I realised this from the high quality design/digital imagery. So, as for the question does the design reflect the website? My final answer is actually yes it does as I have just explained above.

Online Interactivity Analysis 2

Browsing through different websites ‘sony Bravia’ was a website that particularly caught my eye with it strong use of interactivity and imagery (colours).

One of the main reasons why I chose this website was because it was the type of design that I would like to design for my next project. The user is opened to a bright and what I like to call ‘clean and open’ page containing four interactive boxes. The four boxes rotate around by the click of the arrow showing the user different images. I that the designers made a conscious decision of using a white background as this has brought out the bright colours that are confined within the boxes, by having the white background also enhances the image that Sony Bravia aimed to set (there TV have a high colour resolution) overall the layout is a basic yet powerful design and in my opinion is successful.

What I found was a positive point about this work was as soon as I opened the page instructions were show stating the user can use the arrow keys on the keyboard and the mouse to navigate around the page. Once in the page three icons also appeared in the right hand corner with the titles ‘help’, ‘main menu’ and ‘studio’ each one were helpful in there own way. Even though I found that the Sony Bravia webpage was very helpful I did have trouble with navigating. The instructions stated to hover over the box that you wanted to pick however when I done this, the boxes would not move to my selected choice. I feel that other users may experience this problem and its something that will prevent the users from using the webpage.

As soon as the user opens the web page they are immediately greeted with bright and vibrant colours, which is the product that the web page is trying to enhance. The main aim of the site is to let viewers get more detail about ‘Sony Bravia’ the product and the advertisements. I feel that the content of the site is relevant to the product but they have used a different approach to this. Rather then just showing the colours that ‘Sony Bravia’ produce they make the viewers get involved through the use of different interactive objects.

I have two views on how successful the interactive design elements were. In my opinion the webpage lacked sound which lost my interest for a bit however another view on why there was no sound was because one of the interactive objects was to create sound with the use of the objects. I chose a circle to play with, this circle object bounced off the interactive screen and every time it hits the screen it has a musical note. The user can drag the circle anywhere on the page and the tone of the musical note would change, letting the user create their own piece of sound, its strong interactivity and is personal to the user. A problem that occurred with this however was once I have chose the circle object I was unable to return to the page, with no help or directions on how to return to the previous page I had no choice but to move to another page. Having done this I could not find out what the other interactive objects was so I found this quite disappointing. Another interactive piece that this webpage had was users could create their own colours and add it to the colour wall that other users had already added their colours. This was a strong piece of audience interaction and relates to the web site. The audience are given the option to also view the ‘Sony Bravia’ adverts that are currently being show on TV and the making of the adverts. This keeps the audience aware of what the web site is about also gives the audience a ‘behind the scenes’ view of Sony. So when it comes to elements of interactions with the audience this ticks all the boxes.

The content of the website itself has been designed in a well-structured and organised way that users find easy to navigate through. Each separate interactive box contains different sets of information that would all relate to Sony Bravia but in different ways. What I like about the design is the simplicity, which makes it user friendly in my opinion.

On first impressions of the website I would think that Sony Bravia was a company that aims to produce high-resolution picture. This is mainly based from what I have stated in previous paragraphs, strong imagery, bright colours and the interactivity involving colours are pieces of evidence that backs my opinion. To me, the design shows that the company also likes to make strong impressions based on their advertisements, I feel this because there’s a whole separate page letting the audience view every Sony Bravia advert, the making of each advert and background information that helped created these advert i.e. music. Overall the website is a simple yet energetic site through the help of every interactive pieces and gives out a positive identity towards the company.

Online Interactivity Analysis

The first web site that caught my eye was, what I thought was the bionic woman program however the more I analysed the pages the more I realised that it was more of an interactive game and an amusement for users rather then a formative site.

The main point of why I chose this web site was based on the whole image and look. On first impressions of the site I thought it gave out an image of a hospital room. Every interactive piece looked like a piece of mechanical equipment that help’s users get into character. What I liked about this site is that the user is the main character. The interactive voice talks to the users in first person which I feel, is a conscious decision. Using this approach interacts with the users and keeps them interested.

As soon as I entered the web site a clear introduction (a short film) was shown giving me a clear view on what part I was playing on the website. Whilst the pages were loading voice interaction was inputted, acting as, what was suppose to be my (the users) doctor giving out clear instructions what had gone on and why the site was in that certain setting. The whole website is aimed to test your ‘bionic powers’ the instructions are clearly stated on what the user had to do and how to play the games. Overall I found it very user friendly and found it easy to understand what the website was about and what the aim of the site was.

I have never seen the program bionic woman before and I found that the content of the website gave the users a rough view on what the program is about and what the website is about. A positive point that I found was that the short intro film puts the users into character straight away. Like I said above the whole imagery is relevant to the program, including the pholie used gave me a more clearer view on what the website was about. However, I felt the website lacked facts and information about the program. There are no credits to whom created the program, who acts in the show etc. so even though the imagery and pholie helped me gain an idea on the genre of the program it does not actually tell me what the program is about leaving me to only guess what the site is about.

The content of the website is organised/designed in an easy to understand layout starting off with the introduction on what the content of the website will be about. The content is set in a step by step process, by doing this helps the user gradually gain more knowledge on what the content of the site is about. In my opinion I feel that the design of the website helps make the content more relevant to what the website is based on.

The whole design of the website itself is very strong and gives out a strong reflection on what the site is about, an example of this would be the main scene of the website (in a hospital, where bionic woman first starts). The sound effects also helps reflect the identity of the website. If however, if I was to change the design to reflect the identity more then I would probably include a logo or a title because I feel that it lacks an actual brand identity.

The main reason why I chose this website was because of the strong interactive elements that make this site so successful. These interactive elements include sound, imagery, AV and gaming. The gaming is the main point of the website, giving the user five different games to complete to test their bionic skills. What I like about the games is that each user gets a personal score to how well they perform. The gaming elements are very successful because it keeps the user involved and interested in the site and for interactive site this makes it successful.

Easter Holidays

Back from easter and can I say I am pleased to be back because all I have been doing is working to earn money and when I wasn't doing that I was trying to do my coursework so it wasn't so much as a break.

Ok so from what it looks like I have done no work over the easter holidays because, as you can see I have had no blog entries since last term however there is an explanation to this. When I returned home what did not realise was th`t my mum and dad had changed their internet connection and so, my wireless did not work anymore. I tried to reconnect it but it was not use.

Even though this was a big draw back I still managed to complete some work which I can now finally upload. HOORAY!!!
